In August Peggy and I went on a 10-day Rick Steves tour - The Best of Scotland. We had a marvelous time - visiting significant and beautiful sites, great food, with wonderful weather. We gained a deeper appreciation for the history and traditions of Scotland. We also took time to travel on our own and visited longtime friends. The following is a selection of photographs - organized by areas. Of special note to us:
The Isle of Iona and its Abbey (563-1500) - restorations late 1800s and 1930s. Still active as a pilgrimage and ecumenical retreat centre - focusing on justice, peace, and creation. You can see it in a couple of hours - but may wish to stay a couple of days.
The Battle of Culloden 1746 - the site of a terrible loss for the Highland Scots to the English which led to the dismantling of their leadership, land holdings, wealth, language, and highland dress. The pain of these losses remains in the hearts of many Scots. You will see a woman playing a personal lament.
Dunkeld - the part-ruined cathedral remains active. The eight themed chairs indicate spiritual values. Please choose one you may wish to sit with.
Edinburgh - we experienced a bit of the annual festival and attended the Tattoo. This year the Tattoo theme was Peace. Very moving.
Dumfries and Area - this was Peggy’s family home when she was a teen. Peggy made several lifelong friends, who have become friends of mine. We reverenced the loss of her baby brother.
Family Wedding - Peggy’s nephew, from Washington DC, married a lassie at Brig o’ Doon - with Scottish traditions, and dancing. We joined the fun celebration till the end!
