Prep '58 Blog - June 2025

Vita Mutatur, Non Tolitur

We mourn the passing of our classmate, Nelson Fullam, and offer our condolences to his family.   Nelson left us on May 28th, 2025

May God have mercy on his soul.

You can see Nelson's memorial page here.

We heard from Bob Bennett

"Thanks to Bill Wittman for reminding me what caused my persistent writer's cramp...   Pope Leo may be his name now, but for 69 yrs, he was known as.....ROBERT.

Viva il Papa!"

We heard from Dave Connolly

Dave shared some news on the June 9th Zoom call, about recent health issues he has been dealing with. You can hear Dave's story in the video of the ZoomCuppa elsewhere in the Blog.

Dave also reminded us of a piece he wrote some time ago - Preamble, as he called it. We present it here.

 1,331 days later...

We send our congratulations to the graduates of St. Peter's Prep, Class of 2025, as they step into the future!    The world is yours, gentlemen. Go for it!

                                                                  The Class of '58

                                                                   25,828 days earlier...

With only a month to go, we have a "will attend" from 20 guys from the '58 gang about the Summa Bash on Tuesday, July 15th at Bar-A in Belmar.   But we still need to hear from the rest of the gang.

We have a total attendance of 34 so far - the same number of folks that attended last years event.  We have enough room for more than 50, and we hope to set another attendance record this year.  Let's keep the ball rolling.

The team at Bar-A is ready for our event. We will meet from noon 'til 4:00, have some lunch and spend time together with folks we may not have seen since the year before. As we did last year, we  will open the event to folks thru a Zoom session. More information about settings, time will be published shortly.

If you are planning to attend, and you haven't done so, please let Vince know immediately, so we can plan the day with an accurate estimate for the event, and negotiate a favorable deal with Bar-A.

Let's make this the biggest bash yet!

Prep '58 Website - It's worth a second mention...

On the Zoom call of May 12th, we had a discussion about the Prep '58 website, and discovered that several of the guys on the call did not know that there was such a thing as a Prep '58 website. Some thought that the Blog was the only thing available for viewing.

Vince went thru a very quick report on the website (see image of the Home page to the left) and invited everyone to check out all that's available. And there really is a whole lot to see!

  • The entire collection of Petroc's from our 4 years at Prep;
  • the '58 Book Library with reviews by the gang;  various photo and video collections, and other features of interest.
  • We have all six of the photos from our senior retreat at Gonzaga, with most of the guys identified.
  • G'Kid photos sent in over the years;
  • Links to the '58 Petrean, past Reunions, the After '58 Bio's, and a whole lot more.

If anyone has a suggestion for another feature for the website, send in your idea to Vince, and we'll give it a look.

Click here to visit the Prep '58 website.

Happy browsing!

Prep '58 Cuppa Club - June 10, 2025

Three of us got together on Tuesday, June 10th at the Reo Diner - Peter Donnelly, Joe Machewirth and Vince.  Another quality over quantity turnout.

Joe Machewirth shared some of his experiences, good and bad, with being a timeshare owner. Apparently it's a lot easier to become a time share owner than it is to sell your subscription. He also mentioned Cape Cod and how much he enjoys biking there.

Each of us shared stories about our "pre-retirement" days, and how it seems so far in the past already. Vince shared a story about retiring, and then having to unretire, when the guy hired to replace him decided that he was going elsewhere.

We discussed that one of the issues about retirement is the availability of health care plans post-retirement, but there was mixed reviews about them. Vince shared his satisfaction with UHC/AARP Medicare Advantage, which he switched to when the premiums for his Citi health plan went thru the roof.

The conversation went to air travel and the deteriorating service levels, particularly  at Newark Airport. Vince hoped that they get things working properly before he and wife Stephanie head off to France for a family reunion on her side. Vince also mentioned that they were in the process of selling their Cliffside Park apartment, and looking for a house in Ocean County, which would put them within easy reach of Vince's daughters. More to come.

The chatter continued, and then our lunches showed up. After we we gathered around for a photo, we said our goodbyes.

The Reo Cuppa for July is cancelled in favor of the Reunion Summa Bash on July 15th at Bar-A in Belmar. Se information in this Blog edition on the Reunion.

Our next Cuppa Club is scheduled for Tue, Aug 19th at noon EDT at the Reo Diner in Woodbridge.

Zoom Cuppa

We held a Zoom Cuppa session on June 9th and we got a good crowd.

Bill Wittman joined from Canada; Vince, Peter Donnelly and Dave Connolly from NJ,  with Norm Sippel FL, Walt Braun CA, Tom Reilly CO, Dick McConville MA, Jim Heaney MD and Phil Campana TN rounding out the group.

A mixed bag of conversations...

We started with a report from Vince about the plans he and wife Stephanie have to sell their apartment and buy a house. Vince says guys his age are selling houses, not buying them, but they appear to be on their way to becoming home owners. Someone asked Vince which exit on the Garden State Parkway was the house, but he didn't get the joke. "Gotta get out more, I guess," he said. More to come.

Conversation turned to the confrontations in California about the ICE raids and demonstrations. There was little support for what was going on, and there was concern that having armed groups on the streets will inevitably lead to trouble.

From there, we got onto technical problems with TV's, internet, etc. Dave told us about a TV he had problems with in his Cape Card home. He eventually tried the age-old advice, "Give it a whack," which apparently worked. Phil Campana told us that he has a TV that only gets Conan O'Brian, and thinks he will give Dave's "Give it a whack," technique a try.

Dave gave us a bit of history about his homes in Montclair and Cape Cod, both of which he has had for more than 40 years. He told us that he used to go up every year with a plan for a big project, but this year, with some of the health issues he shared with us, he had no plans for any projects. There was discussion about the changes that are coming to the Cape, where the homes are being sold to developers who build large homes, which changes the look and feel of the area.

Dave shared news that he suffered a minor stroke last November, and is still recovering from it. He has no pain, but it has had an effect on his speech. "Things have slowed down," he told us, "I know what I want to say, but expressing it is sometimes troublesome." You can hear Dave in his own words in the video.

Peter shared with us that he's found that no one wants books any more. He and his family has been donating books for years, but in the last 5 years there was little interest any more.

Bill Wittman told us that since the first mention about Canada being the 51st state, there has been a surge of national pride in the Canadian populace.

There was discussion about the fires in Canada and the smoke issues that have resulted. There was discussion about how some of the fires were started, with stories about fires being started as "controlled burns" by the New Mexico  Wildlife Commission that got out of control, and apparently caused a lot of damage.

There was a lot of serious and humorous discussion, and we urge everyone to watch the video.  You can see it here.

If you can't make it to an in-person Cuppa, you can join the gang in a Zoom Cuppa, wherever you are. We have plenty of room, and there's no entrance fee.

The next Zoom Cuppa is scheduled for Monday, July 14th @ 12:00 pm EDT.  Vince will send out the meeting invitation with the pass code.     Please keep the email!

We made it to 40!

We send our thanks to Norm Sippel for his Bio, and we will be sending out his Bio cookies shortly. We hope those who have not done so, will follow Norm's lead and send in your Bio. You can see Norm's Bio here.

How After '58 got started... In March, 2017 we received this suggestion from Bill Kretzer to collect stories from the '58 gang about what they did after graduation.

"I think there would be a bushel of interest in interviews with each & every ‘58 graduate. I for one, since I went away to college and never returned to NJ, didn’t keep in touch as much as I should have and would be curious to hear how everyone’s life turned out."

The Editor asked Bill to send in his story and that was the beginning of the After '58 Bio era.  Almost 8 years and 500 cookies later, we are closing in on 40 Bio's. We should be approaching 100 Bio's, and we need your help to get there.

We hope every one of the '58 gang  will pick up on Bill's suggestion and send in their story in an email to Vince.  It takes no more time to put your story together than it would to tell it to your grandkids, so how about it?  Add your story to the list. We will return the favor by sending a baker's dozen of Stephanie Grillo's famous Chocolate Chunk cookies.

Take a look at the whole collection of Bio's so far.

We started the Blogtoons feature to share some of the humorous cartoons we get from time to time.

Some of them are not technically cartoons, but they all got a chuckle out of the Editor.

Most of them are from '58 guys, but occasionally we will get contributions from a few others...

If you come across one you think the gang would enjoy, send it in to Vince in an email.

Here's a peek at the best of the bunch, so far.

"Lexophile" describes those that have a love for words, such as "you can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish", or "Writing with a broken pencil is pointless."

The Twins Graduate! - Next Month - LeAnna

We are so proud of twin G'kids, Kelsey and Kassidy, who graduated in May - Kelsey from the University of Miami, and Kassidy from Monmouth University.

They are as alike as 2 peas in a pod, and at the same time, as different as can be. They are part of the gang we call "Cuzzins" - all 9 of them - as they move on to the next chapter in their lives.

Congratulations, Kelsey and Kassidy. The world is yours for the taking. Go get it!
