... celebrating St. Patrick's day every year.
But as this St. Patrick's day approaches, we cannot forget that in February 2022, a few weeks before that St. Patrick's day, Ukraine was attacked by Russia, and has been valiantly defending itself since then. It has been three years of suffering for the people of Ukraine, and even as this is written, there is no clear path to the end of the war.
The attack gave rise to a huge humanitarian response from all over the world, and the need for assistance is even more important today. At the time, we made a contribution as a class thru Holy Ascension Cathedral, in Clifton, NJ, and they are still seeking help from anyone who can provide it.
If you wish to make a donation, you can do so here.
...From The Editor
The Blog is available as a tool to 58'ers who have something to share with their classmates. The Editor will certainly continue to find and distribute stories, photos and anything else he believes would be of interest to the class, but the primary purpose of the '58 Blog is to facilitate communication among '58 classmates.
So... keep those cards and letters coming and we'll do our best to get them out to the gang.
BTW, just as the Blog was going to press, we received an email from someone at mmm.att.net, that he and his wife would be attending the Reunion Summa Bash. Problem is that it came in without any name in the message, and we have no one on our contact list like this, so it could be a scam, but if it came from you, please let the Editor know.
The Summa Bash started back in 2015 as a guys-only event and has grown every year into a wives and guests event, with folks coming in from all over the US.
Since 2023, we have combined the Summa Bash with our Annual Reunion celebration, and it has become a big hit. We are planning another, as we speak, for Tuesday, July 15th at Bar-A. If you are planning to attend, please let Vince know as early as you can, so we can plan the day with an accurate estimate for the event.
We had 34 folks last year, and since we have enough room for more than 50, we hope to set another attendance record this year. We already have heard from folks who have a ways to travel to get to Bar-A, where all the action is, and we hope to hear from more. Let's keep the ball rolling.
And we are already talking to the team at Bar-A in Belmar, NJ about our event. As in past years, we will meet from noon 'til 4:00, have some lunch and spend time together with folks we may not have seen since the year before. We hope to see you there!
Feb 2025 - Bob Filoramo sent in this addition to our Library...
Sea Stories by Admiral William McRaven
"Just spent a half hour cruising through the Blog's book reviews. Very impressive! Wide ranging. Challenging.
With that in mind, I would recommend a book I read on our recent So. Caribbean cruise.
The book, Sea Stories, by Admiral William Mc Raven is his story of becoming a Navy Seal and the wild adventures that followed. His life as a Seal led him and his men through raid after raid, rescue after rescue, not without severe injuries and loss of life.
After a serious parachuting accident essentially grounded him, he became one of the high- level planners of top secret raids throughout the world. One of these was the deeply detailed planning of the successful raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan. McRaven orchestrated the entire attack, having received the approval of the Pentagon, FBI, CIA and another set of acronyms leading to the final GO from President Obama.
William McRaven is fearless, innovative, a leader of men, one of the best of the best.
Peace, Bob"
If you have come across a book that you think others might be interested in reading, send us a review. We will add it to the list of reviews we have received already and share it with the '58 gang.
We have over 40 books in the library already, with room for many more. You can see them all here.
We held a Zoom Cuppa session on Mar 10th and we got a large and lively crowd.
Bill Wittman and Rich Campion joined from Canada; Vince, Walt, Peter Donnelly, Jack Gavin, Dave Connolly, Bob Filoramo and Bob Pipchick from NJ; and Walt Braun and Jim Kozmor CA, Tom Reilly CO, Dick McConville MA, Jim Heaney MD, Bob Stubin VA, and Phil Campana TN rounded out the group.
After a few hello's, we got right into it...
There was a discussion about the usefulness of daylight savings time. A majority thought it was time to eliminate the changing of the clocks, but there wasn't consensus on where to leave it - and hour ahead or an hour behind. There was one suggestion that we move it 1/2 hour instead of an hour. I don't think this is the last of this discussion.
We got into Canada and it's new Prime Minister, tariffs, and eventually got into a pretty wide-ranging discussion of various economic issues, including the German model of compensation and bringing manufacturing back to the US.
We launched into a great discussion about working conditions, the impact of unions on the economy, the treatment of employees and other issues that affect the economy of the US and the world. It is worth a listen!
Bill Wittman shared a story with us about his father-in-law and his experience at the company he worked for more than 40 years. Bill's take on the current notion that we can bring manufacturing all back to the US is that it is an idea that may have been relevant in the 1940's, but is no longer relevant today. And beyond manufacturing in the US, he believes the next hurdle we will have to deal with is Artificial Intelligence.
Jack weighed in about why people didn't leave jobs, particularly during the 30's and 40's when there was no guarantee that they could find another job, and the lingering effect that thinking had well into the 50's and 60's.
Phil Campana shared his thoughts about the German economy and the requirement that part of workers compensation during their first year of employment was an investment in the firm's shares, which built in a rationale to stay, since their subsequent compensation was in 2 forms - salary and the residual dividends of their first-year investment.
Jack offered the opinion that unions are looked upon as good in some countries, but not in the US. Walt Braun offered a stat that only 11% of the private work force are represented by unions.
That led to a discussion about companies that had a reputation as good places to work, considering conditions, salary and other factors concerning employment, and Tom Reilly mentioned Kroger's as one such a company, along with Trader Joe's, which turns out to be owned by Aldi's - a German company.
Somewhat off the employment stories, Tom Reilly shared news that he received one (or more?) emails apparently from EZ Pass looking for payment. The gang thought it sounded like a scam, so be on the lookout.
There was a lot more discussion, and as we approached an hour into the call, we signed off. You can see the video of the Zoom call here.
If you can't make it to an in-person Cuppa, you can join the gang in a Zoom Cuppa, wherever you are. We have plenty of room, and there's no entrance fee.
The next Zoom Cuppa is scheduled for Monday, Apr 14th @ 12:00 pm EDT. Vince will send out the meeting invitation with the pass code. Please keep the email!
Eight of us got together on Tuesday, Mar 11th at the Reo Diner - Bob Filoramo and his son Marc, Peter Donnelly, Frank Geremia, Bob Pipchick, John Ricci, Joe Machewirth and Vince.
Vince started off by asking how many of the gang at the Reo planned to be at the 68th Summer Bash, and he got a 100% response.
That was exactly the answer he was looking for. So, we now have 13 guests committed to attend, and we're hoping for a whole lot more. In fact, we would love to make it past 40, which would be a record. Stay tuned for further news.
Joe Machewirth let us know that his wife had been having some health issues, and we send her good wishes for a speedy recovery.
We then got into a discussion of where we all lived while we were at Prep. Jersey City was the predominate answer, but there were quite a few from Union City. From there, we got into high schools in our neighborhoods, and how some of us found their way to Prep. Vince told the story (for the 100th time) about how his mother tied him to the roof of the car and drove him down to the Prep, rather than have him go to Emerson HS in Union City.
Vince recollected that we had our graduation at the Snyder HS auditorium, and several guys remembered the Senior Prom at the Fiesta, which still is a popular venue for weddings, and even proms.
Bob Filoramo told us a story about a $1,000 bottle of wine, which got us talking about how much wine you can drink at a time, and what you do with the left-over wine. Someone said that left-over red wine can be put in the refrigerator to keep it from spoiling, but that it should be taken out and left to get to room temperature before drinking it. Vince mentioned his father-in-law's reaction when he mentioned he had a great tool to store left-over wine - "I never heard of left-over wine" he said.
Frank Geremia started telling us about the (summer?) interns he hires and how he deals with interns who show great promise, and about the Kelly School of Business, which had a great curriculum for business majors.
Next up were comments about Florida timeshares, and just about then, our lunches showed up. We gathered around for a photo and said our goodbyes.
Please join us at the next Cuppa Club lunch on Tue, Apr 15th at noon EDT at the Reo Diner in Woodbridge.
We're sending out a big Prep '58 THANK YOU to George Hicks for sending in his Bio. That gets us to 39 Bio's, and it gets George a baker's dozen of Stephanie's delicious "Bio Cookies". Here's George's message...
"Thanks so much for your informative and interesting blogs. Although I can’t get together with you at your in-person Cuppa's, I’ll try to make it to one of your zoom meetings.
I finally got around to sending you my bio (attached). It was enjoyable reading other bios and find out what everyone is doing in retirement. I also included a recent photo, hoping that you had access to our grad photos from ’58. It was great!
Thanks again,
George"
We hope every one of the '58 gang would make the effort to send in a Bio. It takes no more time to put your story together than it would to tell it to your grandkids, so how about it? Add your story to the list.
After '58 started in March, 2017 when we received a suggestion from Bill Kretzer to collect stories from the '58 gang about what they did after graduation.
"I think there would be a bushel of interest in interviews with each & every ‘58 graduate. I for one, since I went away to college and never returned to NJ, didn’t keep in touch as much as I should have and would be curious to hear how everyone’s life turned out."
The Editor asked Bill to send in his story and that was the beginning of the After '58 Bio era. Almost 8 years, 38 Bio's and and 500 cookies later, we are closing in on 40 Bio's. We should be approaching 100 Bio's, and we need your help to get there.
We hope you will pick up on Bill's suggestion and send in your own story in an email to Vince. We will return the favor by sending a baker's dozen of Stephanie Grillo's famous Chocolate Chunk cookies.
We started the Blogtoons feature to share some of the humorous cartoons we get from time to time.
Some of them are not technically cartoons, but they all got a chuckle out of the Editor.
Most of them are from '58 guys, but occasionally we will get contributions from a few others...
If you come across one you think the gang would enjoy, send it in to Vince in an email.
Here's a peek at the best of the bunch, so far.
Almost 8 years ago, Jack Gavin's G'daughter Charlotte travelled to South Africa. She was 21 years old, and decided that she would give Bungee Jumping a try. The Editor doesn't remember what he was doing when he was 21, but he's pretty certain he wasn't doing this.
Charlotte forwarded a video of the event to Jack, who passed it on to us. Not sure how many of the Class of '58 have done this, but we send congratulations to those who have, and to the rest of the class, here's what we missed.
Vince's wife Stephanie publishes a Baking Blog - Desserts With Stephanie, featuring 100's of recipes for cakes, cookies, pies and other delicious desserts.
We have been featuring recipes taken from her Blog, which are easy to follow and produce delicious results.
In addition to my duties as videographer, I also offer my services as a dessert sampler, and I have sampled this cake. It is almost too good to be true, but trust me - it is delicious. 😊
Watch the video, and if you like it, give it a thumbs up. And if you would like to see more recipes, consider supporting Stephanie by becoming a Subscriber to her Blog.
Now, let's eat!
Vince's GG'son Rylee celebrated his 3rd birthday in late November, and he did it in style. Lots of friends and family, outdoor and indoor fun, and a special Birthday Cake made by his Dad. You can see lots more of the fun here!
