Prep '58 Blog - April 2026

In this edition of the Prep '58 Blog...

We are starting to beat the drum about our 68th Reunion Summa Bash - Tuesday, July 14th at Bar A. We hope you will put the date on your summer calendar and join the fun. More info in the Blog.

Prep does it again! Another over-the-top result for the Founders Day Fundraiser!  The $500M goal was exceeded by more than 15%. Many thanks to all who contributed and supported the effort this year.  See the results here!

Dr. Michael Gomez delivered an Easter message, reminding us that God sees us in ways that we might not see ourselves. His messages are always inspiring, and this one is no exception. You can see it here.

We heard from Gerry Drummond and Phil Campana who shared stories about

Prep grads who made news, and a re-discovered 60 year-old letter.

Walt and Louise celebrated their 46th anniversary in style - we have the photos to prove it.

We take a peek at another issue of the Petroc from the second half of our freshman year, with mention of a successful season for our basketball team; various social activities, and the names of the first Freshman Honor Society All Stars...

A delicious St. Patrick's Day dessert recipe from Desserts with Stephanie...

...and a G'Kid bringing home the gold!

we will be celebrating our 68th Reunion Summa Bash, on July 14th at Bar-A in Belmar, NJ. We know it's still two months away, but it will be here before you know it, and you don't want to miss it!

It's always a great day - we have a private space, with plenty of room and great food, at a reasonable price. Join the gang to make this the biggest Summa Bash yet. Please confirm your attendance with Vince by May 15th.

Latest tally... 10 Will attend...

Petroc Retrospective - April - Freshman Year

We have been highlighting an issue of the Petroc in each edition of the '58 Blog and we welcome your comments. You can see the Petrocs from all 4 years right here.

In this issue - stories about social events - the Valentines Dance and Skating party; results of the varsity basketball season (16 - 4, for the season), while the Freshman team was sporting a 9 - 1 record; and the swim team on an undefeated run to start the season.

Father Carr presented gold pins to the first winners of the Freshman Honor Society. The happy recipients were Richard Donovan, Michael Bonifanti, Andrew Keenan, Robert Bennett and Frank Meola.

And we were reminded of the stress some of us may remember as we got ready for the entrance exams to Prep.     Click here to see the issue.

Gerry Drummond...

"Our track runners will appreciate this...

In the BU David Henry Valentine Invitational in Boston on Feb 13,  2026, Rodolfo Sanchez '21 of Bergenfield ran a 3:59.84 mile .  Rodolfo is a graduate of Loyola U Chicago, Fordham U. NYC and St Peters Prep '21.

Gerry"

Phil Campana....

Vince,
I thought you would be interested in at least part of this note that resurfaced a few days ago from Jack McSherry, SJ.

The first part of the note is personal congratulations on my college graduation, but it also pertains to all of the class of 58.

You might want to share this second part in the next blog.

Phil

“Four years is a long time and a short time as well; I can scarcely believe my classmates are college graduates. Perhaps some of them will pause at the consideration that I am a vowed religious for almost a year now. Each of us has his path to take, and each his way of growing. Never stop growing, Phil! Growth opens all the doors you ever could yearn for. In July of next year, I shall head for Loyola seminary at Shrub Oak for my three years of philosophy. Perhaps we could meet there sometime. Drop a line when you’ve got your plans straight.

Deus sit semper tecum.  Jack, SJ. “

Bob Filoramo sent in a review of a book he read recently.

"I recently read Peter Kreeft's Calvinist to Catholic, his odyssey from Calvinism to Catholicism.

Born in 1938  and raised in Paterson and other close NJ suburban towns, he describes a boyhood much like those of us who grew up in Jersey City, Bayonne, Union City and similar neighborhoods. While he is a brilliant philosopher, teacher, and writer, his stories of his youth in the forties and fifties are hilarious, good old street stuff.

While in Calvin College, he began to explore anti-Catholic prejudice, testing its validity and wondering what Catholicism is about. This led to deliberate, detailed investigation into the essential truths of Church teaching, especially the Eucharist and Sacraments.  In the end, he concluded that the Catholic Church is the one, true Church founded by Jesus Christ and was received into the Catholic Church.

Needless to say he was challenged to explain this to his closest Calvinist friends and, most especially, his devout Calvinist father who was dismayed but ultimately accepted his son's decision.

Peter Kreeft went on to be a prolific writer of philosophy, fiction, poetry and taught at Boston College for 60 years.

Calvinist to Catholic is an excellent book of apologetics for anyone either non-Catholic or Catholics questioning their faith.

Peace, Bob"

We have come a long way since Cos first suggested a Prep '58 Reading Library, but we still have plenty of room on our "shelves".

More than 4 dozen books are in the library, but we're pretty sure many you have been reading, so consider sending in a review of a paragraph or two on a book you especially liked.

Take a look thru our library here.

Walt & Louise - 46th Anniversary

"My love, Louise, and I spent our 46th anniversary dinner at Scarborough Fair on the border of Wall, Sea Girt, and Manasquan, near Rt 35 - a top-rated restaurant not just in Jersey.

I took pics of some of the seasonal lights, sent a few to you and our four girls, and shared some on social media.

Walt"

Here's the NYT front page from April 13, 1955. The Salk polio vaccine was approved and the country was gearing up for immunization as early as April 25, among the top stories.

Just in case your memory is as iffy as the Editor's, we found a site that lets you access the top news stories from back in the day. You can select the year and month, and the major news events for that period will be shown. Below are a few of the stories we found from 1955 from the thousands that are available.

  • February 24: Formation of the Central Treaty Organization.
  • April 12: The Salk polio vaccine having passed large-scale trials earlier in the United States, receives full approval by the Food and Drug Administration.
  • April 18: Death of Albert Einstein.
  • May 14: Signing of the Warsaw Pact.
  • August 18: First Sudanese Civil War begins.

You can see all the headlines and stories from the 50's right here!

The usual suspects logged into the Zoom Cuppa on Monday, Apr. 13th. Rich Campion and Bill Wittman from Canada, Bob Stubin VA, Bernie Whalen VT, Phil Campana TN, Tom Reilly CO, Jim Heaney MD, joined the NJ Crew:  Peter Donnelly and Vince.

We had some trouble getting the right adjustments for Zoom, and a couple of guys had trouble on their end. Eventually we got things going correctly.

Vince & Tom Reilly started with a report on Vince's new home, and the challenges presented by long-distance driving these days, particularly during the night, with road closings, and construction. Tom said the road conditions in Colorado are atrocious, and mentioned that his wife reaches for her rosary beads when they get on the road. He also mentioned that Utah has done a great job with their roads, although the traffic is so sparse that you can go 100 miles without seeing any other cars.

Rich Campion told us of an accident he had, where his Italian convertible sports car left the road and turned upside down. He managed to escape, and in a conversation with the local police in Ft. Knox, KY, found out that a previous accident had knocked down a sign - "Danger!  Curve Ahead."

We had a weather discussion next, with reports of severe drought in some parts of the country, while we are hearing reports of torrential rain in others. Tom Reilly reported very dry conditions in Colorado.

A good portion of the call centered on the Artemis project, and the recent voyage it took around the moon. Naturally, Jim Heaney got questions about how things worked, and let us know that the next big effort is aimed on expanding the range of future explorations to see if we can find other forms of life in our universe and beyond. Jim told us that since the 1990's, the information acquired by the space projects tells us that there are millions of stars out there, and multi million planets around those stars. This had raised the odds that there is life beyond earth. This discussion was very interesting, and I hope everyone reading this report would take the time to watch the video, and listen to the discussion.

We got back to talking about medicine and health issues, and there was nodding agreement that the current state of medical treatment pays attention to symptoms and procedures on a very detail-specific basis, while nobody is looking at the entire patient.

Editor's Note...

This call reminded the Editor of why we started the '58 Blog in the first place, and reinforced our determination to continue to stay in touch with each other, even as our numbers dwindle. Take the time to watch the video. I think you will enjoy it. You can see the video here.    Until next time...

If you can't make it to an in-person Cuppa, you can join the gang in a Zoom Cuppa, wherever you are. We have plenty of room, and there's no entrance fee.   The next Zoom Cuppa is scheduled for Monday,  May 11th @ 12:00 pm EDT.  Vince will send out the meeting invitation with the pass code.     Please keep the email!

The 3 Musketeers showed up at the REO Cuppa on Tuesday March 10th - Bob Pipchick and Frank Geremia joined Vince for lunch and conversation. We got notice that John Ricci, Joe Machewirth and Bob Filoramo would not be there.

The Reo gave away our usual spot near the loo, but we managed anyway....

Conversations about Gkids, events going on in the middle east, oil prices and inflation, and other current events filled the time.

Frank told us a story about an acquaintance who had to choose how to reinvest his IRA once his company decided they were going to reorganize, and decided to wait until the new stock was issued. It paid off with a 400% increase in the value of the account when the new stock was issued. Nice to hear a good ending to the story.

Lots more chatter about gas prices, talk of an oil boycott, and taxes followed, and then lunch arrived. Vince forgot to take a photo - that's happening a lot lately - and we headed home.

You should join a Reo Cuppa if you can. We have had as many as a dozen attendees in the past, and  would like to get a good crowd every month. We have scheduled the Cuppa events for the 2nd Tuesday each month to allow as many guys as we can to attend. Put the Cuppa in your calendar, and join in the fun.

We will give it another go on Tuesday, May 12th @ noon EST at the Reo Diner in Woodbridge.

Prep '58 Website - Check it out...

On a recent Zoom call, we had a discussion about the Prep '58 website, and discovered that several guys on the call did not know that there was such a thing as a Prep '58 website. Some thought that the Blog was the only thing available for viewing.

Vince went thru a very quick report on the website (see image of the Home page to the left) and invited everyone to check out all that's available. And there really is a whole lot to see!

  • The entire collection of Petroc's from our 4 years at Prep;
  • the '58 Book Library with reviews by the gang;  various photo and video collections, and other features of interest.
  • We have all six of the photos from our senior retreat at Gonzaga, with most of the guys identified.
  • G'Kid photos sent in over the years;
  • Links to the '58 Petrean, Reunions, the After '58 Bio's, and a whole lot more.

If anyone has a suggestion for another feature for the website, send in your idea to Vince, and we'll give it a look.

Click here to visit the Prep '58 website.

Happy browsing!

We started the Blogtoons feature to share some of the humorous cartoons we get from time to time.

Some of them are not technically cartoons, but they all got a chuckle out of the Editor.

Most of them are from '58 guys, but occasionally we will get contributions from a few others...

If you come across one you think the gang would enjoy, send it in to Vince in an email.

Here's a peek at the best of the bunch, so far.

42 Bio's, and counting...

We are still on the hunt for After '58 Bio's and we know there are dozens of 58'ers out there who read the Blog, but have yet to submit a Bio. Every one we get has an interesting tale to tell, and we hope you will add to our library.

And... remember those cookies!  Send yours in and we will get them right out to you! Take a look at the Bio's we have.

'After '58' got started in March, 2017, when we received this suggestion from Bill Kretzer to collect stories from the '58 gang about what they did after graduation.

"I think there would be a bushel of interest in interviews with each & every ‘58 graduate. I for one, since I went away to college and never returned to NJ, didn’t keep in touch as much as I should have and would be curious to hear how everyone’s life turned out."

Bill sent in his Bio, and 8 years later, we are at 41. We hope every one of the '58 gang  will pick up on Bill's suggestion and send in their story in an email to Vince.

It takes no more time to put your story together than it would to tell it to your grandkids, so how about it?  We will return the favor by sending a baker's dozen of Stephanie Grillo's famous Chocolate Chunk cookies. We've already shipped out over 500 of the best cookies you've ever tasted, and there's more where they came from.

A Colorful (and Tasty) Cake for Easter

Vince's wife Stephanie publishes a Baking Blog - Desserts With Stephanie - featuring 100's of recipes for cakes, cookies, pies and other delicious desserts. Her recipes produce delicious results, and are easy to follow.  We have been featuring them in our '58 Blog.

Her Jelly Bean Easter Cake will get everyone's attention this Easter. and it tastes even better than it looks. We thought you might like to try it this year as your Easter dessert. It's sure to generate a 'Yummy" or two.  Click here to take a peek at the recipe.

If you like it, give it a Thumbs up. For more delicious  recipes, support Stephanie by becoming a Subscriber.

Click here to subscribe to Stephanie's channel.

BTW, in addition to his duties as videographer, the Editor offers his services as an official dessert taster, and looks forward to sampling them every month. This treat is delicious and the recipe makes it easy to make. Try it!

G'son Nick makes it to the State Tournament

 Gerry Drummond reports...

"This is my G'son Nick, an 8 yrs old wrestler, holding the winner poster today, 3/15/26.

Like his 7 lb. lighter twin brother, Nate, who qualified  weeks ago for NJ State Wrestling Championship Tourney in Trenton on  3/22/26, the heavier Nick qualified today, winning the southern regional spot, after winning town and county earlier.

Here's Nick in a photo taken 3 weeks ago, with top opposing coach, Jordan Burrows, a 6 time World Wrestling Champion and 2012 US Gold Medal Olympic Wrestler, whose son had qualified in a heavier weight class that day. "
