Vita Mutatur, Non Tolitur
We mourn the passing of our classmate, Dominic Fazio, and offer our condolences to his family. Dominic left us on February 16th, 2025.
May God have mercy on his soul.

In this edition of the Prep '58 Blog...
We had a bit of trouble with the video of the March 9th Zoom call. The typical display of the participants on the call wasn't working, so we have close-ups of everyone on the call, rather than a group shot. We published the video anyway, in the best shape we could, which you can see later in the Blog.
Just as we were set to publish this issue, we heard from Frank Geremia that Prep lost the State Championship basketball tournament to Bergen Catholic, 56 to 52, in overtime. Read the story here.
We got a lot of great feedback from folks who have watched the video of our Zoom call with Dr. Michael Gomez. Dr. Mike loved it, and we were delighted that he got us all together. Click here to see the video.
Gerry Drummond continues with another "I Remember..." story from his days as a novitiate in less than comfortable weather in Poughkeepsie Hyde Park NY in 1960, which you can read here. Send in your stories... we'd love to see them.
A peek at another issue of the Petroc continues into the second half of our freshman year, with mention of our freshman basketball team and the Freshman Honor Society all stars... You can see the Petrocs from all 4 years right here.
A delicious St. Patrick's Day recipe from Desserts with Stephanie...
...and a GG'Kid Birthday photo from the Editor.
We have been highlighting an issue of the Petroc in each edition of the '58 Blog and we welcome your comments.
The March 4th, 1955 issue has reports on basketball with a stat sheet for the starting basketball team. There was a story about the annual recreational football game at Gonzaga, and an optimistic report on the Prep swimming team.
We see Freshman Honor Society awards being given to Rich Donovan, Mike Bonifonti and Andy Keenen. Bob Bennett and Frank Meola missed the photo op. Don Melaga, Andy Repka and Randy Orlowski got another mention for the success of the freshman hoops season, sporting a 9 and 1 season so far.
And we were reminded of the stress some of us may remember as we got ready for the entrance exams to Prep. Click here to see the issue.

Here's the NYT front page from March 17, 1955, in the middle of the escalating cold war with Russia. The Cuban missile crisis was still 4 years away.
Just in case your memory is as iffy as the Editor's, we found a site that lets you access the top news stories from back in the day. You can select the year and month, and the major news events for that period will be shown. Below are a few of the stories we found from 1955 from the thousands that are available.
You can see all the headlines and stories from the 50's right here!

The usual suspects logged into the Zoom Cuppa on Monday, Mar. 9th. Walt Braun CA, Phil Campana TN, Tom Reilly CO, Jim Heaney MD, Rich McConville MA, Rich Campion and Bill Wittman from Canada, joined the NJ Crew: George Armbruster, Peter Donnelly, Dave Connolly, Gerry Drummond, and Vince.
First came the weather... getting near 70 in parts of NJ, while in Ottawa, there's still a lot of snow around.
Someone mentioned Quebec, which started a discussion about a kidnapping of Pierre LaPorte and James Cross from Montreal. That led to stories about driving on the "other side" of the road in Quebec, signs in French and English and the difficulties involving kilometers and miles on the highway.
Bill Wittman mentioned Dr.Mike's comments from our last Zoom call about Prep tuition, which various guys remembered as $240 per year, or thereabouts, and remarks about whether any of us would have been able to go to Prep if the tuition was as high as it is now, at $26,000 per year.
The medical profession got the spotlight next, with more than a few comments about "too many specialists," and not enough generalists.
Tom Reilly told us that two friends from his military days were up for the Medal of Honor. One was a guy in his wedding party. He mentioned another friend who had a destroyer named after him. Pretty cool stuff.
Then came a trip down memory lane, starting with Rich McConville mentioning at least one McConville brother attended Prep all thru the fifties. There was mention of Father Shalloe - "How do you know you don't have a vocation as a priest, if you don't try it?" Then, recollections of who sat where in class, and the realization that our memories are a mixture of facts, massaged memories and complete blanks, which get filled in from fragments of other memories. Among the memories were Ed Bradley, Mike Joyce, George Blaney, Bob Cousey, Holy Cross and others.
It reminded the Editor of why we started the '58 Blog in the first place, and reinforced our determination to continue reminding ourselves of some pretty good times in our lives. And it doesn't hurt that as our memory fails us, some of the things we are talking about now, will be "discovered" again as new memories in the future. A never-ending supply, so to speak.
You can see the video here. Until next time...
If you can't make it to an in-person Cuppa, you can join the gang in a Zoom Cuppa, wherever you are. We have plenty of room, and there's no entrance fee. The next Zoom Cuppa is scheduled for Monday, Apr 13th @ 12:00 pm EDT. Vince will send out the meeting invitation with the pass code. Please keep the email!

Four of us showed up at the REO Cuppa on Tuesday March 10th. Joe Machewirth, Bob Pipchick and Bob Filoramo joined Vince for lunch and conversation.
The Reo was accommodating, as usual, and let us hang out for a couple of hours.
Conversations about the cost of drugs (the good kind), former jobs, pensions and our Zoom call with Dr Michael Gomez were the topics of the day.
Bob Pipchick told us he is healing from the difficulties he was having with his neck, and no longer needs the brace he had been wearing. He coined a new phrase - numb skull - to describe the aftermath of the surgery, which left the back of his neck numb. All agreed that there were numbskulls of a different kind we had encountered.
Speaking of medical issues, Joe Machewirth told us that some of the drugs his wife had been taking were upwards of $9,000 to $12,00 per month. That got us into the increase in the cost of just about everything, which, in turn, got us into Medicare, and the variation in the medicare deduction based on gross income, called Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA).
There were recollections of prior reunions, and stories about attending them after being away from Prep for a while. Some said they didn't recognize many of the folks they met for the first time since graduation.
We discussed pensions, and what we have been doing since we retired. Bob Pipchick mentioned substitute teaching, Vince told us he keeps busy with his wife's baking blog business, and taking care of Prep '58 things.
And Vince told his story (again!) of his encounter with Joe Lupardo in senior year which got him thrown out of Physics class until he apologized.
Lots more chatter, and then lunch arrived. We took a photo and headed home.
You should join a Reo Cuppa if you can. We have had as many as a dozen attendees in the past, and would like to get a good crowd every month. We have scheduled the Cuppa events for the 2nd Tuesday each month to allow as many guys as we can to attend. Put the Cuppa in your calendar, and join in the fun.
We will give it another go on Tuesday, May 14th @ noon EST at the Reo Diner in Woodbridge.

Although they didn't get the snowfall that others got, Vince and Stephanie Grillo reported that they were buried for almost two days before the snow-clearing activities got to their location.
"We survived," Vince said, "having hit the markets for a bread, milk and eggs run a day earlier."
If you have snow related photos or stories, send them to Vince, and we can compare notes.

On a recent Zoom call, we had a discussion about the Prep '58 website, and discovered that several guys on the call did not know that there was such a thing as a Prep '58 website. Some thought that the Blog was the only thing available for viewing.
Vince went thru a very quick report on the website (see image of the Home page to the left) and invited everyone to check out all that's available. And there really is a whole lot to see!
If anyone has a suggestion for another feature for the website, send in your idea to Vince, and we'll give it a look.
Click here to visit the Prep '58 website.
Happy browsing!

We started the Blogtoons feature to share some of the humorous cartoons we get from time to time.
Some of them are not technically cartoons, but they all got a chuckle out of the Editor.
Most of them are from '58 guys, but occasionally we will get contributions from a few others...
If you come across one you think the gang would enjoy, send it in to Vince in an email.
Here's a peek at the best of the bunch, so far.

We are still on the hunt for After '58 Bio's and we know there are dozens of 58'ers out there who read the Blog, but have yet to submit a Bio. Every one we get has an interesting tale to tell, and we hope you will add to our library.
And... remember those cookies! Send yours in and we will get them right out to you! Take a look at the Bio's we have.
'After '58' got started in March, 2017, when we received this suggestion from Bill Kretzer to collect stories from the '58 gang about what they did after graduation.
"I think there would be a bushel of interest in interviews with each & every ‘58 graduate. I for one, since I went away to college and never returned to NJ, didn’t keep in touch as much as I should have and would be curious to hear how everyone’s life turned out."
Bill sent in his Bio, and 8 years later, we are at 41. We hope every one of the '58 gang will pick up on Bill's suggestion and send in their story in an email to Vince.
It takes no more time to put your story together than it would to tell it to your grandkids, so how about it? We will return the favor by sending a baker's dozen of Stephanie Grillo's famous Chocolate Chunk cookies. We've already shipped out over 500 of the best cookies you've ever tasted, and there's more where they came from.
Vince's wife Stephanie publishes a Baking Blog - Desserts With Stephanie - featuring 100's of recipes for cakes, cookies, pies and other delicious desserts. Her recipes produce delicious results, and are easy to follow. We have been featuring them in our '58 Blog.
Her Flourless Chocolate Cake with Bailey's tastes even better than it looks. We thought you might like to try it this year on St. Patrick's Day. It's sure to generate a 'Yummy" or two. Click here to take a peek at the recipe.
If you like it, give it a Thumbs up. For more delicious recipes, support Stephanie by becoming a Subscriber.
Click here to subscribe to Stephanie's channel.
BTW, in addition to his duties as videographer, the Editor offers his services as an official dessert taster, and looks forward to sampling them every month. This treat is delicious and the recipe makes it easy to make. Try it!

Vince reports...
"Stephanie created a special birthday cake for a special birthday boy.
Great grandson Rylee turned 4 years old in November, and Stephanie decided he needed a very special cake for the occasion.
She still hasn't lost the touch for design that used to be her hallmark when she designed special occasion cakes in her bakery.
These days, she will get back in the groove for special family occasions.
Happy Birthday, Rylee!"
