In this edition of the Prep '58 Blog...

Less than two months and counting...  The 68th Reunion Summa Bash is scheduled for Tuesday, July 14th at Bar-A in Belmar. We have 32 confirmed attending, but we are hoping to  get a whole lot more. We hope you will put the date on your summer calendar and join the fun. More info in the Blog.

We heard from Rich Campion who shared stories about 2 Prep teachers whom he said "... were instrumental in my life."  Read the story in the Blog

With the retirement of Rich Hansen, his son Rich Hansen III will become the new Athletic Director for the Prep. See the story in the Blog.

Walt Braun recommended a video, "The Secret Story of Saint Ignatius of Loyola."    You can see it here.

We take a peek at another issue of the Petroc from the second half of our freshman year... Stories about the baseball program left a lot to be desired, but there's always next year, right?...

A delicious blueberry pie  recipe that is perfect for your Memorial Day picnic dessert from Desserts with Stephanie...

...and a birthday photo.

We will be celebrating our 68th Reunion Summa Bash, on July 14th at Bar-A in Belmar, NJ. The fun starts at noon. It's two months away, and it will be here before you know it. You don't want to miss it!

It's always a great day - we have a private space, with plenty of room and great food, at a reasonable price. Join the gang to make this the biggest Summa Bash yet. Please confirm your attendance with Vince ASAP.

Rich Campion

" As I was day-dreaming yesterday, I started seeing images of my life at The Prep all those years ago. I was especially remembering two of the Jesuits who taught me French, Mister Pugliesi SJ (spelling?) who taught me in Junior year, and Father Blaise Jascko SJ (spelling?), who taught me in Senior year. And they both were instrumental in my life.

Mister Pugliesi had done French studies at Université Laval in Quebec City, where I eventually received my MA in French, and did my PhD work, but did not complete my thesis. At Laval I met, wooed, and married Charlotte Fortin, and our daughter, Barbara, was born. I did not complete my doctoral thesis and taught English and translation in the Québec college system. I was also involved in weightlifting, and organized the first collegiate weightlifting championship in Québec. We eventually left to move to Ottawa, where I became the Technical Director of the Canadian Weightlifting Federation. There, I set up the national coaching system, and taught coaches. I eventually was elected to the International Weightlifting Federation, and was the speaker (competition director) at the Montréal, Los Angeles, and Atlanta Summer Olympic Games.

Father Blaise Jasko was a Jesuit teacher in Hungary when the USSR moved in and took over his country in 1956. He eventually had to leave Hungary, and he became a teacher at the Prep, where he was also the swimming coach. He spoke excellent French and taught me French in my Senior year at The Prep. He also gave me a French novel, Premier de cordée, which was the first French novel that I ever read. It was about mountain rescues in the Alps, and was thrilling. I went on to major in French at St. Peter’s College. After getting my BA, I served for two years in the US Army (Infantry) at Fort Knox, KY.

While interpreting at a conference in Toronto I visited Father Jasko where he was assigned to St. Elizabeth’s Parish. St. Elizabeth is the patron saint of Hungary. He remembered me and we had an enjoyable reunion.

A whole new, surprising, and wonderful life opened for me at The Prep."

The Hansen Legacy Lives On

Rich Hansen III will take on the role of Athletic Director at Prep. The Hansen  family has a long history of leadership within the school's athletic department.

  • Rich Hansen (the elder): Has served as the Athletic Director since 1988 and was the head football coach from 1988 to 2020. He recently announced that the 2025-26 school year will be his last.

  • Rich Hansen III: Currently serves as the head football coach and an assistant athletic director. He will succeed his father as the school's next Athletic Director starting July 1, 2026.

Prep '58 congratulates them both. See the story here.

Petroc Retrospective - May - Freshman Year

We have been highlighting an issue of the Petroc in each edition of the '58 Blog and we welcome your comments. You can see the Petrocs from all 4 years right here.

In this issue - a report on a tight, 7-man race for Student Council President - Frank Gregory was the eventual winner; the first Prep graduation at the newly renovated Snyder High School Gym;

In Debating news, Greg Sullivan was picked as outstanding Freshman, followed at a very close second by John Petrozzi. In the Silver Debate Tournament that ran through the last six months, Robert Bennett  was mentioned among the group that got top honors .

Stories about the baseball program left a lot to be desired, but there's always next year, right?

Reports on track and  basketball rounded out the sports coverage.

The Green Banana Saga Continues...

You may remember Bob Filoramo's 80th Birthday celebration when he was gifted with 80 green bananas by the Editor, who explained that  they would last quite a while - a fitting gift for one celebrating a birthday of that many years.

Well, Bernie Whalen and Jack decided that we hadn't heard enough about green bananas, and they submitted these comments...

" Vince,

You either have 2 birthdays or you celebrate twice or I keep a lousy calendar.

In any case please accept the attached as a gift from the guys.

Jack"

"Yep Jack,

Vince is the top banana. The amount of bananas at the stand is close to his age. Happy Birthday Vince!

Here's the NYT front page from May 9, 1955. The Salk polio vaccine immunization project was held up in New York, pending further review.   Talks continue between US and Russia. It also was the Editor's birthday, back when he was still recognizing them.

Just in case your memory is as iffy as the Editor's, we found a site that lets you access the top news stories from back in the day. You can select the year and month, and the major news events for that period will be shown. Below are a few of the stories we found from 1955 from the thousands that are available.

  • February 24: Formation of the Central Treaty Organization.
  • April 12: The Salk polio vaccine having passed large-scale trials earlier in the United States, receives full approval by the Food and Drug Administration.
  • April 18: Death of Albert Einstein.
  • May 14: Signing of the Warsaw Pact.
  • August 18: First Sudanese Civil War begins.

You can see all the headlines and stories from the 50's right here!

If it looks like these guys are having a good time, you are right!

We had a good crew for the Zoom Cuppa on Monday, May 12th. Rich Campion joined us from from Canada, Bob Stubin VA, Bernie Whalen VT, Phil Campana TN, Tom Reilly CO, Jim Heaney MD, Walt Braun CA, and Rich McConville MA joined the NJ Crew:  Don McLaughlin, Bob Pipchick, Bob Filoramo and Vince.

From ships to planes to blimps, it was a lively discussion that finished off with what are referred to these days as "Dad Jokes." A little corny, but we liked them. We hope you do too.

Vince asked who will be attending the Summa Bash who may not have responded, and got a nod from Rich McConville that he and wife Pat will be joining us at the July 14th Reunion. Happy to hear this. If you haven't signed up for the Reunion Summa Bash, now is the time.

More good news....  Bob Filoramo let us know that he has recently spoken with John Conroy, and there is a possibility that John will also be joining us at the Reunion.

We got into discussions about various ships during a discussion about the landing of the space capsule, and which ship was part of the recovery effort. Some said is was the Midway, which is harbored in San Diego and open for visits, along with a German submarine, captured at the end of WWII.

Jim Heaney mentioned that John Conroy was a pilot and landed planes on the Midway. He also mentioned a book that John recommended to the gang - WWII At Sea, by Craig Symonds.

Tom Reilly told us about a friend of his that was being honored at a ceremony for the commissioning of a new guided-missile destroyer, the USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr. (DDG 124), named after him at a ceremony in Norfolk, on April 11th. Retired Col. Harvey C. "Barney" Barnum Jr., 85, is a friend of Tom's in the Marines.

We started talking about the TV series, Victory at Sea, which was very popular when it first aired, but has not been on TV since. Apparently there are some legal issues involving the sound track.

Vince mentioned that he can hear planes, some quite noisy, flying over his house. There was speculation that a naval installation at Lakehurst air base is the origin of the noise. It was mentioned that Lakehurst was the location of the squadron of blimps that were active through the 30's but which were decommissioned after the Hindenburg disaster in 1937. For an article about the Hindenburg, click here.

Then came several jokes that some guys wanted to tell before we closed the meeting. We are not going to repeat them here, but you can hear them in the video of the Zoom session (see link below).

Editor's Note...

Like other Zoom meetings in the past, this call reminded the Editor of why we started the '58 Blog in the first place, and reinforced our determination to continue to stay in touch with each other, even as our numbers dwindle. Take the time to watch the video. I think you will enjoy it. You can see the video here.

If you can't make it to an in-person Cuppa, you can join the gang in a Zoom Cuppa, wherever you are. We have plenty of room, and there's no entrance fee.   The next Zoom Cuppa is scheduled for Monday,  June 8th @ 12:00 pm EDT.  Vince will send out the meeting invitation with the pass code.     Please keep the email!

Until next time...

The 3 Musketeers showed up at the REO Cuppa on Tuesday March 10th - Bob Pipchick and Frank Geremia joined Vince for lunch and conversation.

Conversations about Gkids, events going on in the middle east, oil prices and inflation, Pope Leo and President Trump, and other current events were on the agenda, along with recollections of home room teachers, and some basketball all stars.

Bob Pipchick told us about his G'son who graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and got a job at Lockheed Martin. Bob also mentioned that he had met folks from the Ebenezer Baptist Church, who were attending an event at Holy Cross, where Bob attended.

Frank Geremia told us about meeting Mohamud Ali at a boxing event at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 . He also told us about his G'daughter, who had a job with the Kardashian family, and met the Chairman of Nvidia Corp in the Green Room while managing a presentation in Las Vegas. She graduated with a degree in Fine Arts, but went on to be a lawyer, and once repped for Kevin Hart.

We changed course and started to recall the likes of Father Halligan, who wound up in Quito, Ecuador, and Father May. That was followed by by recollections of Mike Pedone, John Crotty and other Prep sports stars.

You should join a Reo Cuppa if you can. We have had as many as a dozen attendees in the past, and  would like to get a good crowd every month. We have scheduled the Cuppa events for the 2nd Tuesday each month to allow as many guys as we can to attend. Put the Cuppa in your calendar, and join in the fun.

We will give it another go on Tuesday, June 9th @ noon EST at the Reo Diner in Woodbridge.

Prep '58 Website - Check it out...

On a recent Zoom call, we had a discussion about the Prep '58 website, and discovered that several guys on the call did not know that there was such a thing as a Prep '58 website. Some thought that the Blog was the only thing available for viewing.

Vince went thru a very quick report on the website (see image of the Home page to the left) and invited everyone to check out all that's available. And there really is a whole lot to see!

  • The entire collection of Petroc's from our 4 years at Prep;
  • the '58 Book Library with reviews by the gang;  various photo and video collections, and other features of interest.
  • We have all six of the photos from our senior retreat at Gonzaga, with most of the guys identified.
  • G'Kid photos sent in over the years;
  • Links to the '58 Petrean, Reunions, the After '58 Bio's, and a whole lot more.

If anyone has a suggestion for another feature for the website, send in your idea to Vince, and we'll give it a look.

Click here to visit the Prep '58 website.

Happy browsing!

We started the Blogtoons feature to share some of the humorous cartoons we get from time to time.

Some of them are not technically cartoons, but they all got a chuckle out of the Editor.

Most of them are from '58 guys, but occasionally we will get contributions from a few others...

If you come across one you think the gang would enjoy, send it in to Vince in an email.

Here's a peek at the best of the bunch, so far.

42 Bio's, and counting...

We are still on the hunt for After '58 Bio's and we know there are dozens of 58'ers out there who read the Blog, but have yet to submit a Bio. Every one we get has an interesting tale to tell, and we hope you will add to our library.

And... remember those cookies!  Send yours in and we will get them right out to you! Take a look at the Bio's we have.

'After '58' got started in March, 2017, when we received this suggestion from Bill Kretzer to collect stories from the '58 gang about what they did after graduation.

"I think there would be a bushel of interest in interviews with each & every ‘58 graduate. I for one, since I went away to college and never returned to NJ, didn’t keep in touch as much as I should have and would be curious to hear how everyone’s life turned out."

Bill sent in his Bio, and 8 years later, we are at 41. We hope every one of the '58 gang  will pick up on Bill's suggestion and send in their story in an email to Vince.

It takes no more time to put your story together than it would to tell it to your grandkids, so how about it?  We will return the favor by sending a baker's dozen of Stephanie Grillo's famous Chocolate Chunk cookies. We've already shipped out over 500 of the best cookies you've ever tasted, and there's more where they came from.

An All Star Dessert

Vince's wife Stephanie publishes a Baking Blog - Desserts With Stephanie - featuring 100's of recipes for cakes, cookies, pies and other delicious desserts. Her recipes produce delicious results, and are easy to follow.  We have been featuring them in our '58 Blog.

Her Triple Berry Tart will put you in a picnic mood and it tastes even better than it looks. We thought you might like to try it this year as your Memorial Day dessert. It's sure to generate a 'Yummy" or two.  Click here to take a peek at the recipe.

If you like it, give it a Thumbs up. For more delicious  recipes, support Stephanie by becoming a Subscriber.

Click here to subscribe to Stephanie's channel.

BTW, in addition to his duties as videographer, the Editor offers his services as an official dessert taster, and looks forward to sampling them every month. This treat is delicious and the recipe makes it easy to make. Try it!

 Celebrating...

For Vince's 85th birthday, Stephanie gathered family and friends for a celebration at Bar-A on Sunday, May 3rd.

Bar-A did a great job with the catering, and all had a good time.
