We all seem to remember that a food fight broke out in the senior room in our senior year. But as you can see from the stories below, there are a few different versions of the events, and there is more than one suspect who might have started it.
Back a few years ago, we asked you all to send in your version of the Food Fight, and we published the stories in the Blog. Those original stories are published below.
Recently, at a Cuppa, we started talking about it again, and decided to open the floor to anyone who might want to send in their version of the story, or embellish their original version.
If anyone has anything to add, we would love to hear it. Send it in an email to Vince and we will take it from there
I was late for lunch. I was not aware of the pre-fight chatter and sat down to eat my sandwich. At my table was Walter , Jimmy, Ed, and a few other friends. All of a sudden all hell broke loose. A few half subs came flying over the table and the guys at the table retaliated but not me. I just sat there and watched in awe. How could this be happening at Prep? Everyone ran but me. I did not do anything. In comes the proctor of the lunch room. I was the only guy at the table. Off to the prefect. Two weeks of JUG. I refused and for the first time in 4 yrs I was suspended.
I whipped a donut or something like it at the other end of the room and then ducked under the table watching lunch after lunch go airborne, laughing hysterically. Spontaneous outbreak. A moment just waiting to happen. It was a riot, literally and figuratively.
I don't remember who got in trouble; I didn't. Naturally, the room was a mess. I guess some of the miscreants were made to clean it up. Some of those ne'er do wells may have landed in jug. Not me. I repent after all these years for being a "nutsy."
Vince,
I was being facetious about the library, but it was a long time ago. I do remember the incident, but not any particulars. I don’t believe I threw the first sandwich, but I certainly participated.
My memories of Prep are all positive. Certainly very influential in my development as a Christian.
Enjoy reading the blog. I spend most of my time in Naples, the balance in Mass. or traveling.
I often reflect on the many friendships nurtured at Grand & Warren. It wasn’t always easy, but we are all beneficiaries of the tough love of the Jesuits.
In Hoc Signo Vinces.
Best regards,
Mike
I don't remember a food fight but I used to eat lunch at the deli. 15 cents worth of potato salad an a dill pickle.
It is a blur. Or, was that just food flying by? No recollection of details. But, it was hilarious. I'm sure a few got Jugged for it.
I think Filoramo started it. However, I have trouble remembering what happened yesterday, let alone 58 years ago!!
Tommy Brescia is the only one who got it right. It was Friday Mass and we were having coffee maybe hot chocolate and white covered donuts. One donut was thrown then another came sailing back and on and on. Then the tables went sideways and all those coffee cups went over the side The most pissed off person was Fr Smith who ran the kitchen and was responsible for giving us our ammunition. What I remember seeing was one all white football letter sweater with a huge coffee stain on it. don't know whose it was. We lost use of that senior room for two weeks. I believe we were all considered guilty cause Smitty couldn't prove who was at fault. That's my recollection guys.
Someone tossed a powdered donut into the fan
There was a monumental food fight that happened before our time and resulted in the removal of all the chairs in the underclassmen's cafeteria. But the Seniors were given the privilege of retaining their chairs in the Senior Room.
One Friday morning after First Friday Mass, the seniors were in the Senior Room eating donuts and milk & coffee? One of our un-named innovators wanted to see what would happen if a powered donut were thrown into the large (industrial size) and operating fan down at one end of the room. Thus the origin of the phrase "when the s##t hits the fan." Of course it sprayed donut fragments in a wide pattern across the room and the fight was on. Tables got overturned to create shields and all manner of missiles became airborne.
My memory tells me it was late in the year, maybe even June, and that it was First Friday. After Mass we went to the Senior Room for the standard doughnuts, juice and milk. (Did anyone drink coffee then?) For some reason it seemed the whole class was pumped up. Suddenly tables were turned over and a blizzard of white powder doughnuts is in the air. Guys are screaming, ducking, laughing, throwing stuff, everything. Then it was over; the Senior Room was a train wreck. We left and went to class and I swear I saw a priest outside the door, laughing. To my knowledge no one got in trouble. It was like it never happened.
We were in the Senior Room after Mass on a Friday - maybe it was first Friday Mass-when someone throw a donut and then everyone joined in who had food to spare. Some ducked under the tables and continued to eat (either they were really hungry or had no sense of adventure.) Jelly donut with powdered sugar were the best missiles. When all the ammo was used up everyone quickly left
OK. As a representative of the mid-west, I will humbly accept the Cuppa Mug. Address is correct. Thank you for sharing, Randy.
By the way, Randy started the food fight.
Hope you had fun in Oxnard. Suggestion for a question in the Blog: Can anyone recall how the food fight in our senior room started and what do you recall of the melee?
Not me, folks. Probably one of those football team rowdies. Amazing to watch; it came out of nowhere and built to a fireworks like finish.
My best recollection is the look on Fr. Murray's (Prefect of Discipline) face when he showed up, followed by a mass JUG. Based on some of the faces (not names) I vaguely seem to recall, it seems to have happened about 2 years before we were seniors. (Or was that another food fight?? Very fuzzy after almost 60 years!!)
PS: How about Fr. Murray as a Prep memory?
Also our stunning football loss to Memorial, ending our hopes for an undefeated season.
I had just sat down and was starting to eat when I heard a lot of yelling behind me. Turned to see the beginning of the action and stuff started coming my way. Got out of there in a hurry.
Wish I had gotten in a throw or two, but chickened out.
I do know it was Friday morning after mass and powdered donuts were the most used missile so powder filled the air. Mr. Duffy came running in and went running out. The football team has just received their white letter sweaters so those were christened.
I gave Rafael Reding a powdered donut to toss and pointed him in the right direction.
